Horse Guardian Series
Sobekkare's Revenge, Guardian VIII![]() "Nefret?" Why wasn't the elegant mare answering her? Was she asleep? Jumana peered through the stable's darkness, hoping to see Nefret's white star floating in the gloom, but could see nothing. "Aswan?" Jumana tried, thinking that maybe the steel-gray stallion would answer. She held her breath as she waited for his response, but there was no answering whinny, no hoof stamping on the dirt floor, no swishing of a long tail. With one hand holding the doorpost, she stepped into the darkness. Carefully, she felt her way toward the horses' tie stalls, found the divider between the two, and stepped inside Nefret's stall. She reached to touch the mare's hindquarters and felt only empty space. Her chest tightened as she stumbled with outstretched arms toward the manger. Nefret's dinner was only half eaten, even though the horses had been fed hours before. Jumana felt for the ring the mare was tied to and discovered the rope still knotted to the iron with the halter hanging from the end of it. "Oh no," she whispered, her fingers desperately feeling for a break in the leather. But there was no defect. The halter had simply been unfastened. She moved swiftly around the partition and into Aswan's stall to find his halter, undamaged as well, hanging from the ring attached to the wall. With her breath coming in gasps, Jumana hurried toward the door. Nefret and Aswan had been stolen! She had to get help, and quickly! But Nefret and Aswan haven't been stolen. They are in a much worse situation than that! Will Jumana be able to save them? Or will her beloved horses, along with horses all over the world, fall prey to a ghastly fate?
