Rattlesnake Rock, Guardian VII
Moving as soundlessly as possible, Rosa dashed to hide behind a large rock near the canyon mouth. Slowly, she peered over the edge. Her eyes swept across the green expanse.
And there they were, standing in a huddle near the water hole! Then she noticed the colt at their hooves, lying in the water.
But that doesn't make sense, she thought. Horses don't rest in water.
With sudden alarm, she realized what was happening. The two-year-old colt was stuck. The rain had created a mud hole and he had walked into it, unaware.
I have to help him, she thought, and straightened without thinking. Palomino, pinto, chestnut, bay, and gray heads turned toward her as one. A second later, the herd was on the move. And the colt-the colt she remembered being white but who was now the colour of mud-struggled like a mad thing, sinking deeper into the mire.
More than anything, Rosa wishes she could change the ranch owner's opinion of mustangs. He doesn't value the horses and won't allow them on his massive ranch. That's why she's glad the mustangs have chosen Lost Canyon as their home. They are hidden there, safe. or so she thinks.
