Horse Guardian Series
Dark Fire, Guardian IStabenfeldt A/S ![]() Lisa cringed back against the hay as Jimmy’s yell shattered the silence. “Hey, little Lisa! Are you listening?” he bellowed. She heard him walk along the line of stalls again. “I know you were in here, and I’ll bet anything that you can hear me now!” A whistling noise slashed through the air. “If you don’t come back in here, I’m going to beat your precious nag!” When Lisa heard the loud thump, she started forward, but she couldn’t squeeze around Angelica. “Wait,” whispered the older girl, but Lisa wasn’t listening. She heard the whistle of the whip slash through the air again and another thwack as it landed. “No, he is tricking you. Listen to me,” insisted Angelica. “He is not hitting Jupiter. He is trying to lure you out by beating a bale of straw with a riding crop.” Lisa was so relieved that her knees felt weak. She slumped to the ground as Jimmy continued to whip the bale of hay. She couldn’t see him, but she could imagine him with a smile on his face between shouting cruel things about Jupiter, so proud of himself for thinking of luring her out. And there was something else bothering her. What was it? Think, think! she commanded herself. But the only image that came to her mind was that of Jimmy’s narrow face and sly smile. Then suddenly she remembered the cigarette he was smoking when he came into the stable. He couldn’t be yelling if he had it in his mouth. Did he throw the lit cigarette into the straw? Would the stable catch on fire? When Lisa’s family sold their house and horses, life became hard enough – but when her dad finds out that the new owner, Mr. Pickering, is letting Lisa come over every day to visit her beloved horse, Jupiter, he forbids her to go again. Lisa is determined to keep visiting, but then things get even worse! Jimmy, Mr. Pickering’s nasty nephew moves in. Lisa has to start sneaking out at night, not only to avoid her dad’s anger but to avoid Jimmy as well. He too has forbidden Lisa to come visit the horses. She tries to talk to Mr. Pickering but he seems to have disappeared. And now the final blow, Jimmy is abusing Jupiter! Lisa feels she has nowhere to turn. Then, out of the blue, a teenaged girl with strange golden eyes appears from nowhere. She says her name is Angelica and offers to help Lisa and the horses – and Lisa is so desperate for help, she accepts. But who is this odd girl? Where did she come from? And most important of all, what can she do to help? Find out how others liked this book. Although this book is not available from the author, signed copies of other books are.
