Angela Dorsey’s BlogWiley’s Grand AdventureYesterday, Wiley started a new life adventure with a new person, Keshia. We decided he needed to get out and learn some stuff, and that Keshia is the perfect person to teach him. She is taking him for four years and is going to teach him to jump and compete. Keshia promises that she’ll keep us all updated on his progress, and in turn, we can all cheer them on! Here is a photo of Keshia and Wiley. It’s obvious that he likes her, isn’t it?

Yeahh. Go wiley.
Will you miss him?

I will, but I’m happy that he’s going to be doing more stuff too. I guess Keshia is very happy. Wiley whinnies to her to call her back whenever she leaves him!

Aww, that’s cute! He must really enjoy being with her!
My horse Socks does that, too!
We are probably going to sell our show horse, Posie.
I don’t want to, but she would make a great horse for a beginner that wants to show, and I would rather get a trail horse that I can ride across my property and in my neighbors field. Posie wouldn’t do that.

Wow. Hes gonna be a smarter boy when he comes back!
Is orion going to be lonely?
July 13th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Orion was lonely for a while, but luckily there is a horse farm very close to our house. She looks over the fence at the other horses when she’s feeling lonely or comes up to our house for treats. She seems to have adjusted quite well, actually, which is a relief.

My horse doesn’t have a very big field but she never gets lonely because we live on a farm(sort of). We have eighteen goats, and nine of them are babies. (They are sooo adorable
) My horse just loves watching the goats play. She even likes to watch them sleep. We have al kinds of other animals too. (About thirty rabbits, a pet pig, two cats, two dogs, and my pet mice.)
I have a problem and I thought maybe you guys could give me some ideas. My horse probably has very boring life. I love her to death, and I try to groom her as often as I can, but she isn’t trained. She has been broken, and I used to ride her, but its been almost two years sisnce anyone has ridden her. I’m the only one in my family that knows how to ride (the right way) but even I’m not that experienced. I’ve had about ten riding lessons and a few other times just trail riding but I still don’t think it’s a good idea for me to be the first one on her back in two years! My family can’t afford a proper trainer, but I’ve been asking around and a few experienced riders have offered to ride her, but then their offers fall through and they forget about it. What should I do? I know my horse needs exercise, and that the older she gets the more she is going to forget.

You could advertise her available as a half lease at your house. That way, if someone was interested, they could come ride her three days a week from your house. You’d have her the other days to ride, and she wouldn’t leave your property. You may find someone who is an experienced rider who just can’t afford the expense of a horse right now. Lots of people don’t have the resources to keep horses, so you’d be doing something nice for them too.
There are some things to watch out for though. You should ask for referrences to make sure the rider has a reputation for being kind, plus write up a lease agreement, and make sure that there is some insurance coverage in case Penny Stealer bucks them off and they get hurt. You don’t want to be sued! In BC, we get our insurance throught the Horse Council and as long as both us and the person leasing have insurance, then we’re covered.
Anyone have any additional ideas?

I think that half leasing is a great idea, and you could put ads up in nearby stables and barns, and in tack shops - places where horsey people go. I don’t know much about half leasing, but maybe you could also watch the rider ride once or twice before agreeing to the lease. Good luck, Amanda!!

What you could do with the leasing to make sure that the additional rider is a good match for your horse is have a one month trial. Then, at the end of that month, you can decide if the rider is good for your horse and the rider can decide if your horse is good for him or her.
Also, a lot of people pay for a lease, so you might be able to make $100 a month or so from your lease. With us, we’re leasing Wiley out for free, because we like to help people out and because his new rider is training him to jump, but most people who lease a horse, pay some money to ride that horse.

Thanks, guys! I like the half leasing idea, and so does my mom. We might just try it!

I’m so glad we could help! Let us know how it turns out, okay?
