Spring and Cold

Its been so nice outside now that I’m having a hard time staying inside and getting enough writing done. Its like the outdoors is calling to me. Yesterday, I planted a bunch of new plants and went for a walk, the day before that I spent some time with the horses and mowed the lawn, the day before that I dug up plants, planted new ones, and spent time with the horses… and so on.

However, today things changed. All I want to do is stay in bed because I’m getting a cold! Ugh!

:(  I Hope you feel better!

  2. Stephenie Says:

I hope you feel better soon, Angela!  :(

  3. Angela Dorsey Says:

Thanks, guys. I am feeling a bit better. Vitamins are great things!

  4. Anne-Line Says:

Hi! Oh, I have also got my cold back!  :(  Today I can almost not speak at all! But the weather here is really good, its 23+ outside! (I don’t know if we in Norway measure the heat in the same way as you, but then at least 23 Norwegian degrees :P   :D  )

  5. Angela Dorsey Says:

I’m sorry to hear about your cold, Anne-Line. I hope you’re feeling better soon. Mine hasn’t become too bad yet, because I’m taking lots of vitamins.

We measure heat the same way in Canada and its been lovely and warm here too. In the USA, they measure it differently. I think 23 in Canada and Norway would be called around 75 in the USA.

  6. Rachel D. Says:

Oh- so it’s nice over there. I’m glad your getting better Angela- vitamins are wonderful capsules of healing!

  7. Stephenie Says:

My mom makes us take vitamins every night, but for at least two months, I “forgot” to take mine. :P The weather is getting weirder over here. One day it is almost 100 degrees and the next it’s dipping below freezing. :(

  8. Rachel D. Says:

Wow- that’s how it is where my Dad is at right now. He say he went jogging and it started snowing! By the time he got his jacket it was hot again- so he kept jogging and then it rained- and then it hailed- and then it snowed- and then it was sunny again! :D

  9. Angela Dorsey Says:

    So weird!

  10. Stephenie Says:

It’s global warming. As we cut down more trees, it releases CO2 into the air, keeping the sun’s heat trapped.  :(

  11. J.F. Says:

Hey Angela, I’m sorry to hear about your cold. I know what it’s like to be stuck in bed with nice weather out!

  12. Angela Dorsey Says:

Actually, burning fossil fuels is what is mainly causing the problems, Stephenie. But I think you’re right that the weather fluctuations are related to global warming. Its better to walk or take public transport if possible than to drive in a car - or better yet, ride a horse!

Thanks, JF! I’m feeling much better today.

  13. Tavia Says:

I hope you keep feeling better! :) Why don’t you write outside when it is nice out? Even if you usually type, you could get a notebook or something and sit outside and write, then transfer everything to the computer on a rainy day. Maybe being outside (with horses, preferably) would give you inspiration!

  14. Angela Dorsey Says:

You are totally right, Tavia. I did that a lot last summer, but got out of the habit because of the winter. But now I can start again, with my laptop computer. Thanks for reminding me!

  15. Stephanie Says:

I’m glad you are feeling better! (And hope you continue to do so) :)

The thing about global warming, is that we aren’t causing it… it’s a cycle the Earth goes through. I mean, a few hundred years ago, it was warm enough, long enough, in Europe that they were able to grow grapes for wine. It’s cooled down since then, now it’s just warming back up a little.

  16. Brittany Says:

I’m glad you’re feeling better Angela! I was really sick last week. I had a temperature of 104.6! But I’m all better now!

I’ve been trying to come up with something to draw. I have a very bad urge to draw, but I don’t have any ideas! Any suggestions? It can have anything to do with dragon’s and horses.

  17. Angela Dorsey Says:

I’m glad to hear that you’re feeling better too, Brittany.

Anyone have any ideas for Brittany’s art? Horses and dragons are such great subjects!

I’m glad you brought that up, Stephanie. Not many people tie in the earth’s natural temperature fluctuations with global warming. However, I agree with you. I think that the burning of fossil fuels is an additional contributor though, but who knows how much? I don’t really think anyone KNOWS the answers, not even the scientists really, even though their theories are much more educated than ours, that’s for sure.

  18. Stephenie Says:

We’re just helping it along, I guess. :P

  19. Angela Dorsey Says:

Unfortunately. That’s why I think its important to conserve energy, within reason, whenever we can.

  20. Mirriam Says:

Hey, Brittney! I love to draw, and lately I’ve been drawing tons of fantasy things like elves, dragons, winged girls, and stuff. I also love to draw horses and superheroes. If you need any fantasy ideas, go to http://www.neondragonart.com. She has books too, that are great for drawing! She has three drawing books, and if you google :neondragon books it will give you the cheapest price for used ones. (Some as cheap as five bucks! For a twenty five dollar book! I”m going to get some.) Hope this helps!

  21. Stephenie Says:

I want to switch to solar and wind power if I were president. :D Even if that would never happen. :P

  22. Mirriam Says:

    I don’t believe in Global Warming ^_^

  23. Angela Dorsey Says:

I hope you become president, Stephenie! I think both solar and wind power are great things. At our house, we’d do alright on solar power in the summer, but winters wouldn’t be very good as there isn’t much sun. Also, we don’t get enough wind for wind power.

I’ve heard of a new theory too, about harnessing the power of the waves. It seems like a cool idea, but I don’t know a lot about it yet.

It seems like we have every view on this board - those who believe in conserving as much energy as possible, and those who don’t believe in global warming at all - I think its great that we can all have different ideas and yet all get along so well!

  24. Stephenie Says:

It’s what makes us all different- all in good ways. :D

  25. Tavia Says:

I think it is kind of funny that everyone always argues about whether global warming exists, because scientists CAN tell whether or not the planet’s temperature is rising - what no one really knows is whether it is a natural phenomenon or if it is caused by burning fossil fuels and stuff like that. So I think that instead of asking ourselves whether global warming exists, the question should be what is causing it. If we, humans, are causing it, then I definitely think conserving energy and using solar and wind power (and wave power?) are all great ideas.

  26. Angela Dorsey Says:

    Well said, Tavia.

I think that sometimes when people say they don’t think that global warming exists that really they’re trying to say that they don’t think we’re causing it and that its just a natural phenomenon. I hope so anyway, because like you say, it is getting warmer.

  27. Rachel D. Says:

I know the globe is warming lol- but I don’t believe we’re all gonna burn up and die.
I know we’re gonna be sustained. But I think some things help it allong.

  28. Mirriam Says:

Hey, if the globe got warmer, did anyone stop to think about the fact that it would be GOOD for the earth? Anyway, there have been recen studies to show that the ice in the north pole are several centimeters thicker this year than they were before! And anyway, hey! God’s in control. I really seriously doubt he’s gonna burn us all up.

  29. Brittany Says:

Thanks for that website Mirriam! It gave me a lot of ideas! The tutorials are great, too! I’ve decided I’m going to draw a water dragon leaping out of the water w/ the moon and stars shining above it. :D

I hate Global Warming :( It doesn’t snow at all here anymore. It used to snow all the time. I believe that people are making the ozone layer disappear, so we get less protection from the sun’s UV rays.

Second thoughts, I might make that water dragon a water horse. hmmmmm…

  30. Angela Dorsey Says:

I love your idea for a picture, Brittany, especially with the moon and stars shining above the water-horse or water-dragon! It will be very striking and dramatic!

  31. Rachel D. Says:

    Well said Mirriam!

  32. Mirriam Says:

Thanks, Rachel! You seem really cool.

  33. Mirriam Says:

Hey, Rachel! Do you want to be e-pals? Angela, am I allowed to do this on here??

  34. Angela Dorsey Says:

Sure, Mirriam. I think its awesome that you two are becoming such good friends! Lets wait for Rachel to answer, and then if she agrees, I can send you each other’s email addresses. :D

  35. Mirriam Says:

Thanks, Angela! You’re cool, too! :)

  36. Angela Dorsey Says:

      :)

  37. Stephanie Says:

lol, Angela is DEFINATELY cool! I mean she couldn’t come up with the awesome stories if she wasn’t!

I think E-pals is a good idea Mirriam! That’s cool that you thought of that!…Who want’s to be mine? lol

  38. Kathryn Says:

Angela is, definitely. Probably everybody who ever goes on this site is. According to me, anybody who likes horses is cool!

  39. Tavia Says:

:D  What about people who don’t like horses, but LOVE them? :D

  40. Brittany Says:

Okay, I decided to make my drawing of a water-horse! I finished the stars, moon, and horse. Now I just have to draw the water. :D

  41. Stephanie Says:

    lol Tavia

  42. Mirriam Says:

Uh, hope I didn’t scare you off, Rachel! Brittney, if you could tell me some about yourself, we could email!

  43. Kathryn Says:

That’s my joke, Tavia! What about people who don’t love horses? I mean, I don’t. I ABSOLUTELY ADORE them!

  44. Tavia Says:

I am worse than you, Kate! I am DELIRIOUS about horses! There is no hope for me! :P

  45. Tavia Says:

Hey - I know there are a lot of people who, uh, like/love/adore/are delirious about horses here. I am going to the International Peace Gardens Equestrian camp for 2 whole weeks in August…that’s two rides (both over 1 hour) per day. Plus tons of horse-related stuff during the rest of the day. It is International, so I’m assuming pretty much anyone can go (if you get the forms in on time!) If you’re interested, visit one of these sites:
    http://www.legionathleticcamp.com/article/equestrian-camp-list-296.asp
    OR
    http://www.legionathleticcamp.com/article/-54.asp
:D Just thought it would be nice to let some fellow horse lovers know! (Plus, it would be cool to meet some of you in person at a horse camp!) :)

  46. Angela Dorsey Says:

What a fun time you’re going to have there. You’ll have to tell us about it when you’ve done it!

  47. Tavia Says:

:D  Thanks. Trust me, I’ll tell you all about it! I will take lots of pics too

  48. Kathryn Says:

Yeah, we’ll hear all about it, all right. No doubt about it. And Tavia, I don’t actually think you’re more delirious about horses than I am, but let’s not have a competition. You own more gear, anyway. :P

  49. Tavia Says:

I don’t see why people should be measured by how much horse gear they have - that makes no sense at all! Besides, I’ve been riding for much longer than you. That’s the only reason I have more gear. Let’s just call it equal. I’m sure everyone here is pretty delirious about horses! :P

  50. Brittany Says:

Sure Mirriam! We could email each other!

Today was my last day in seventh grade. I’m kind of sad though, this year I had really awesome teachers. And I’ll miss all of my friends over the summer. But at least I have more time to spend with the horses. I have six but don’t have a whole lot of time to ride once all the work is done.

  51. Kathryn Says:

Wow! That’s pretty early for school to get out. I go until the 26th of June!

  52. Mirriam Says:

    I’m homeschooled, so it doesn’t matter ^_^

  53. Kathryn Says:

Yeah, a couple of my friends are homeschooled and they really like it. I tried it a few years ago…it just wasn’t for me. I love school!

  54. Tavia Says:

I can’t be homeschooled because I am in French Immersion…I think for some reason there is no french immersion homeschooling system. Oh well. It could probably get lonely, anyway.

  55. Stephanie Says:

I’m being homeschooled this year too! I like it but miss my friends. But just this year, because of some health problems that are doing better now, gladly! I love public school too, and am looking forward to it next year!

  56. Anne-Line Says:

What does homeschooling mean? Do you get homeeducation or something?

Ashley has a hedgehog for a pet, right? We have got two hedgehogs in our garden. they are so cute :) I call them Miss Piggy (cause she makes some funny pig sounds) and Ludvig (after a famous Norwegian tv hedgehog. I believe he is called Lambert in English). They are sleeping under a bush in our garden in the daytime, and crawl around in the night. :D

  57. Kathryn Says:

I think there is a way to be homeschooled in French. We live in a bilingual country even if the only truly through and through bilingual province is New Brunswick.

  58. Angela Dorsey Says:

Your garden hedgehogs sound so adorable, Anne-Line! I love the names you gave them.

Home-schooling is being taught at home with your parents being the teachers. And I think that if your mom or dad spoke French, that would be considered French Immersion home-schooling. I don’t know for sure though.

  59. Tavia Says:

Isn’t there some way to do it over the internet? I thought there was still a curriculum you had to follow, and exams you had to take.

  60. Angela Dorsey Says:

Yes, it depends on how you set it up. There are programs you can do over the internet, or being taught a curriculum by your parents with a teacher to help, or less structured teaching by the parents with teacher support. There are a lot of ways to do it, but no matter which way you choose, you have to enrol in a government approved program.

  61. Anne-Line Says:

We have some friends in Australia, and their children get their education over webcamera, because its a very few schools in Australia after what I have heard. But I have to go on a regular school. Today something really funny happened. It was sooo warm outside, and the classroom was cooking :P  We begged the teacher to let us go out, but he refused. And suddenly the fire alarm began to ring, and everybody went`hurraaayyy! :D Then we could go out! it was the best time to get a fire alarm training ever! :D

  62. Kathryn Says:

:)  When I homeschooled (for a month or something) it was through a school. They had a resource thing where I got textbooks and worksheets and curriculum. They had teachers there and I had Science class and some other class there. It was way different than any class in school….

  63. Angela Dorsey Says:

That sounds like a cool way to do it too. Did you learn lots or little?

  64. Tavia Says:

I wonder if people learn more getting homeschooled, because although it could get lonely, at least you wouldn’t have to put up with annoying people in your class who hold you back by fooling around all the time. I have a science exam this year, and we are supposed to do a whole unit (cells) in about two weeks if we’re going to have any time at all to revise for the exam in class. My science teacher is strict, but enjoys embarrassing troublemakers in front of the class and spends a lot of time doing so. The troublemakers themselves distract the class (and my teacher) so we’re pretty behind. :( I guess I should just study and work as hard as I can - there’s not much more I can do!

  65. Brittany Says:

Good luck on your exam Tavia! Try your best to push all those distractions out of your mind. :)

  66. Tavia Says:

      :)  Thanks, Brittany! I’m trying!  :)

  67. Rachel D. Says:

I’m homeschooled! (no you didn’t scare me away Mirriam)

  68. Kathryn Says:

Yeah, I’ve got finals coming up too, and boy am I nervous! I’ve got a countdown happening….a week and a half until finals start. I have Math on Monday June 16, Science-17, Socials-18, French-19, and English-20. That’s a week with an exam a day. Then I’ve got a piano exam on the 12th…. Good luck to everybody else!

Do you do final exams when you homeschool?

  69. Angela Dorsey Says:

Good luck on your exams, everyone!

  70. Brittany Says:

I was surprised at my finals! They were sooo easy! And we didn’t even have one in Math! Good luck everyone!

  71. Tavia Says:

My science teacher said that our science exam this year is the hardest exam he’s seen in 10 years of teaching! I have math and science exams this year, and year-end projects in everything else. They’re all due on Monday. Gulp!

  72. Kathryn Says:

    One second, here…..

What does final exams have to do with Spring and Cold? We’re a little off topic. :P

  73. Brittany Says:

HaHa! Like always :) I wonder how we did that?

  74. Kathryn Says:

Yeah, how did we do that?

  75. Brittany Says:

haha, I just looked back to see how the conversation turned! It turns out it was me! Haha, that’s so funny! I said something about school getting out!

  76. Kathryn Says:

I just read in Pacific & Prairie Horse Journal that Theodore O’Connor, the Shetland/Arabian/Thoroughbred pony was euthanized on May 28th. :( He spooked during a hack, throwing his rider and running back to the barn. He fell and slip into the side of the barn, severing the arteries, tendons and ligaments of his right hind leg. That’s really off topic but I wanted to tell somebody, and I didn’t know where else to put it.

  77. Angela Dorsey Says:

That’s so sad, Kathryn. I feel badly for him and his person.

  78. Tavia Says:

Wow. That’s really sad. I hate it when horses have to get euthanized, but I guess they can’t get their legs put in casts like humans can. I wish there was another way to heal things like that.

  79. Angela Dorsey Says:

I think that some of the less complicated breaks can be fixed, but most of them can’t. It depends a lot on how quiet the horse is too. I’m glad that some can be helped, but I wish more horses could be saved.

We had a horse, Star, who broke her hind leg right at her hip joint. We don’t even know how it happened - we just went out to the pasture in the morning and her hind leg was just flopping. Star’s girl, Maria (my oldest daughter), cried and cried. It was so sad when we had to have our beautiful RivenStar Crystal put down.
