Angelica Moments

Have you had a moment when you felt completely connected to a special horse? Would you like to tell other readers about it? If so, send me your story and it may end up on this page!

From Elisabeth in Sweden:

I feel that I have a connection with my favourite pony Baronen ( a New Forest Pony) at the stable. Every time I go into his his box, ride him, or just look at him, I feel that we are one. When he looks into my eyes it is like he is saying, "I trust you." It is a very special, strong feeling. He is a such wonderful horse, I wish he could be mine but he is too small for me, my teacher says. But I donīt care. I will always love him. He is the only horse I feeling this connection with.

From Sarah in The United States:

Hi,here's my newest "Angelica Moment"!
I was on vacation with my family at Williamsburg, Virginia and we went to this speach behind the King's Palace. Well, I was bored to tears and looking around for something to stare at. Amazingly, to my right I saw a BEAUTIFUL white horse grazing in a field not too far away. It had a long silky mane (of course!) and a beautiful coat that shone like snow in the sun...but when we had to leave I was sad. Partly because the horse wasn't nearly close enough to pet. We turned to leave and I blew the white horse a kiss... at the exact same moment the horse lifted his head and looked at me! It was so amazing and it truly was the best day of my vacation!

From Gabrielle in The United States:

I love horses more than any other animal in the world but I don't have one. My favorite horse is a Chincoteague pony filly named Scout. She's a buckskin. She's also very stubborn. When Scout decided to stop at a creek to get a drink, I couldn't make her move. I was about to cry I was so frustrated. Then finally I made myself calm down and I said, "Scout, just move, please." I asked her to walk with my hands on her reins and she went as quietly as if she hadn't been misbehaving a minute ago. She still drives me crazy but every now and then she'll be really sweet and do everything I ask. Really a Jekyll & Hyde kind of pony but I love her anyway. Thanks for all those lessons in patience, Scout!

From Chloe in The United States:

Hi, my name is Chloe! I am a huge fan of your books! I can't wait for another one to come out! I have some Angelica moments for you! We have this horse at my barn, Gremlin, and he was abused. Well, one day they were trying to bridle him, and they couldn't. He wouldn't let them! So, it took me about 5 seconds to go in there, calm him down, tell him everything was alright, and bridle him up. The next one was this little pony, Nugget, who was acting up for a girl in my lesson. Now, you have to realize, this is my favorite pony in the whole world, and I do think we have a special bond. Anyway, I got on and he did fine!

From Cecilia in Sweden:

I have a special connection to a horse called Bellman. Heīs not alive anymore, because he got a sickness in his leg that he never recovered from. I really miss him. He was the most lovely horse you could imagine, always tried his hardest even if he didn't understand or was scared. Before he came to my riding school he had a very bad owner that was very mean to Bellman. He hit him and other horrible stuff. It really aches my heart because he never did anything wrong. He was the most wonderful horse, ever so sweet and kind, but that man did destroy a part of him. Bellman was a little scared of people, but if you only talked gentle and low to him then he relaxed and his personality showed the kindest horse on earth. I know that he's dead but it really doesn't feel like that. Everytime I walk pass his old box I get a weird feeling and when I stand on his favourite place in the field I feel a gentle breeze and can feel his presence. Then its like he's still alive and is really there. I hope that he's happy in heaven. I love you Bellman, rest in peace my dear friend.

From Kine in Norway:

Last summer, when me and some friends were riding our favourite horses, Babe, the pony I loved so much, tripped and fell. She injured her knee badly. I was really worried, because she looked like she was in a lot of pain. The vet came, and fortunately, it was not as bad as it looked. However Babe was so scared, she was shaking. I tried to calm her down by talking to her, but it didn`t seem to work. She was still shaking, and everyone could tell that she was in a lot of pain. Seeing her like that made me cry. I don`t know why I did it, but I started to sing for her. Suddenly she calmed down and just looked at me, like if she tried to tell that she trusted me. She didn`t even look at the vet, she just kept on looking at me. The whole world kind of dissapeared. It felt like our souls overlapped. We were just standing there, looking at each other. I will never forget that moment. She just moved away, but when I close my eyes, I can still see her.

From Hannah in the USA:

My Mom, me, and my instructor Sam were moving my horse Lita to a new pasture. Lita had been put in her pasture and my Mom and Sam were loading some hay into the back of our car a few yards away to bring to Lita. I was in the pasture with Lita. There was a house nearby and some kids there were being very noisy. They were yelling and screaming and their dog was barking...it was echoing all over, too! Lita got spooked and started galloping around the pasture. I happened to be in the way, and she had a little "rodeo moment" and kicked me in the backside as she ran past!

It hurt a lot, obviously, so I started crying and yelling for my Mom to come over. It took a minute for her to hear, because my yelling was blending in with the kids by the house, who were still screaming. During that time, I was lying on the ground. Lita came over to me, a bit calmer now, and she bent down and nuzzled me. At first I was kind of mad at her for kicking me, but then when she nuzzled me and snorted softly, I knew she hadn't meant to hurt me, and I calmed down a little. I patted her, and she snorted again, and then she trotted off and behaved perfectly. My Mom got there, and I wasn't hurt except for a big bruise that hurt for a week!

From C.S.M in the USA:

I was at a horse show a while ago, and my horse, a Thoroughbred X Hanovarian named Joe, was in the trailer. My trainer was pulling out of the show grounds (me and my mom were going straight home) and Joe looked back right at me through the trailer. I felt so special!!

From Julie in the USA:

One of my two favorite horses in the world is Tinkerbelle, a beautiful gray Tennesse Walking Horse. There were a lot of people there that day so I only got a few minutes to be alone with him. But when they'd all walked away, I stood up on the gate and put my arms around his neck. He nuzzled me gently and sniffed my face. I felt completely attached to him, as if we were one being. I just stood there, holding him, and feeling a wonderful, warm feeling inside. I love to ride, and I've never ridden Tinkerbelle. But he is the most special horse in the world. I love you, Tinkerbelle!

From Stephenie in the USA:

I went riding the other day on my favorite horse, Katie! She was alert and calm - and slow - on the trail. My Mom said that next year I can get private lessons and I may just ride Katie and help out at the stables!

From Ashley in Canada:

The other day I went horseback riding at my favorite ranch. They always ask you about your riding level so they know what type of horse to give you for the ride.. I was very experienced at western horsemanship so they gave me a very stubborn horse. Her name.. FIRE. She was wild... She was crazy... She was the most beautiful horse I had ever ridden. She was fast and everytime there was an open space or we were loping or trotting she would try to pass the others... What did that mean? RACING TIME!! I love her she has so much free power to her. She so full of energy. I'm requesting her each time I go now!! LOVE YOU, FIRE!!!

From Bettina in Norway:

One time, when I was on a hack with my very favourite horse, we kinda got lost up in the wood, me and a friend. I loved this horse, but I was about to love him even more. We were looking for a way down, back to the main track, but we couldn't find any safe way! The horse I rode started trembling, and we were scared he might be hurt, so I started crying. The way we went up was too dangerous. We found that out when we wanted to go down again. We decided to let our horses chose the way down. First they stood there for a sec, then they started walking, and found this perfect way down! When we got down, I was so relieved and was so proud of him, that I started crying again. I hugged him many times, and when we got home I checked whether he was hurt or not. He wasn't! I was happy again! After that I totally trusted him!! I love him, but I miss him.. ( He's gone now.. )

From Angela in the USA:

This happened to me awhile ago.... at my barn we have playdays and one day we were finishing up a playday when my trainer, Karen told me to help some of the other girls give their horses a drink of water. Suddenly, a car went speeding by (I ride in the mountians so it's really quiet) and it spooked our half blind horse, Ryan, and scared the little girl who was holding him, Amanda. I told Stephanie to hold Charlie's reins and grabbed Amanda in one hand and Ryan's reins in the other. I yelled for Karen and she came running over and she grabbed Amanda. I held Ryan and calmed him down a lot and then Amanda thanked me. I felt really good. :)

From Emy in Hungary

There was a pony in a horse-camp, named Pinch. On the second day I woke quite early and decided to go for a walk and see the horses. When I walked across the farm, Pinch trotted over to me and "said", she wants to be my friend! I was so happy!!! After the camp, about four months later, I heard the news, that they moved (nobody knew, where they went) and took all the horses, which meant, Pinch had gone away - forever!!! I cried for almost two weeks and I'm still very-very sad!!! I know, its strange, but I've got a feeling, that I'll see Pinch someday later.

From Maria in the USA

I had the most amazing thing happen to me with Bertolli, my horse. I have been extremely tired lately and it just rained yesterday. So when I got to the extremely muddy stable I prepared Bertolli's food and walked him over to the round pen. I put the food in the middle of the arena, and then went to go get a sleeping bag from my mom. I put it down next to Bertolli and lay down. Bertolli was calmly eating his food when he suddenly he just walked away to the other side of the pasture.

I thought that was strange and turned around to watch him for a bit. Then my mom yelled at me, "MARIA! BOBCAT!" I turned around to see the bobcat just feet outside of the arena, with Bertolli standing in front of it. Bertolli had placed himself between me and the bobcat so that it wouldn't hurt me. He then calmly walked back to me as I stood up and began to gently herd me away towards the gate of the round pen. He would keep himself in front of me, nudging me with his nose so that I would back up toward the gate. Once we were at the gate he continued with nudging me until I put on his halter and allowed him to leave the round pen.

Lately, I've had a hard time and I think Bertolli is aware that I have lost someone close to me and am in need of a dear friend. I am so happy to know that he loves me and would never intentionally do anything to hurt me. I guess a horse is the closest thing to having a perfect friend. They will always listen and will always be there for you. I am just glad I have Bertolli and he has me. After all what more do you need in life, than your horse.

Anne-Line with Charlie

From Anne-Line in Norway

My favourite horse was a Haflinger gelding named Charlie. He was a lovely boy with lots of his own ideas. We were best friends, but something happened to his leg, so they had to put him down. He was a good boy. I hope he has it great in heaven!

From Cat in the USA

I go to this family camp called Camp Greenville. They have a horse farm there, and they let people go on trail rides and stuff as an activity. When I went up there last, there was a black and white paint, who would let no one ride him without a good fight. His name is Slider. I wanted to ride him regardless of his bad attitude. But when I went in his stall to take him out, he just stood there looking at me (and I at him) without a care in the world. I was able to ride him on the trail ride when no one else (without a steel hand) could. So I look forward to riding him each time I go to camp.

From Sarah in the USA

One day when my family was just driving around in the car, we passed this small pen where this brown Miniature horse was. As soon as it saw us it ran after the car until we had passed by. My parents teased me that it was trying to "follow me", but I think it's sort of true. And the weird thing is that in my Diary the horse picture for the month looks JUST like the Miniature horse!

From Blanche in Hungary

Well, I've never had a horse of my own, unfortunately, but I had a special connection with one horse... I have ridden at riding schools before, and the latest one was in a small village near our town. We helped the girl who owns the place with the work, and I loved being there with the horses. My favorite was a black mare called Heidi. I often felt that we could understand each other. So after spending months there we realised that the owner saw nothing in her horses but money, and that she beat them often. Heidi's back was full of wounds, and she wouldn't let anyone put the saddle on her. She was beaten up, and in the end she died.. :( The owner still owed us money because my granpa has bought them the building material for the new stable, so we asked for a horse instead of money. The other animals were taken away from her because of being cruel to animals. That was a month ago, but I'm still depressed, and asking myself why did my beloved horse have to die.

Sparkie

From Sparkie in the USA

I was in a horse show, and the judge asked us to canter. I was riding a very special bay appendix QH gelding named Guy. We started to canter, and after we got about half the way around the ring, he started to shake his head, but never broke his stride. I knew that he wanted to stop, but I kept him going, and in the end of the class, I placed third!!

From Lexi in the USA

When I lived in Virginia Beach, I went to a farm called Cedar Hall Farm. They had the cutest horses and ponies! Most of them were stubborn which I love! Ms. Holly, our riding instructor, got a new pony. He was very fat, very stubborn, and had a lot of attitude! Ms. Holly knew I loved stubborn ponies so she told me to try him! It ended up that I was the only persn who could ride him! He would bite everybody except for me! I trained him not to bite for about a year and worked! Still nobody could ride him! Since nobody could ride him Ms. Holly asked if I would show him! Of course my answer was Yes! Ms. Holly thought he would never get any ribbons because he was not a show horse. I showed him six times and I always got second, second, fourth! I have a lot of red ribbons! After a year of riding him he no longer needed a horse girth but a pony girth! He is now an average size pony instead of above average!

My riding instructor, Lori, rents horses from other places for summer camp. My absolute favorite is a bay Thoroughbred gelding named Jackson. I rode him for camp; we came second in the show! After one of my lessons on him, the barn staff told me he was going back home tomorrow and that I wouldn't see him until next summer. I nearly cried. When I took him to the pasture, there was nobody around. Before I let Jackson loose, I gave him a big hug and a kiss and said, "I'm going to miss you, baby." Jackson's eyes looked emotional, and he nuzzled me before walking off to join Bombay and Irish. No one saw me say good-bye. Since then, I've missed him, and I still do.

From Chelsea in the USA

Okay, this isn't my connection with a horse, but rather my dog's, it's still cool. My dog Spot gets along with no other animals. He was bred to chase cows, so he definitely doesn't get along with farm animals. But one day, a new neighbor comes riding down our road on a white mare. All of our other animals go crazy, but Spot doesn't. He just looks at the horse and wags his tail. Then, when our neighbor rides into our yard, and Spot is still acting cool, we let him out, and him and the horse get along just fine! By the way, our neighbors are good friends now, and our animals are too!

From Ashley in Canada

One day I went to the ranch I go riding at called Miracle Ranch. I was going on a 2 hour scenic ride and I had a beautiful little mare named Bubbles. The leader told us to get ready because we were going to start loping. When she said that I felt Bubbles get tense and nervous. I didn't get scared and nervous. What I did was I rubbed her head and neck and told her that it was going to be okay. I told her that she could trust me. The people in my riding group looked at me funny because I was talking to a horse but I didn't care. I kept talking and rubbing her ears until she wasn't tense or nervous anymore. When we started to lope it was very smooth and I can tell that she trusted me just as much as I trusted her. This taught me what me and a horse can accomplish together.

From Genevieve in the USA

Whenever I hear or see horses, whether across the field, from the car as my mom's driving by, or wherever, I feel a close connection to them. Even if I see a photo of a horse, it's the same. I just always feel like Angelica, whether I see a horse, or even a person in trouble.

Kirsten and Sundance

From Kirsten in the USA

Sometimes when I am around many horses, and I hear one of them whinny, sometimes it sounds like someone is talking. It is almost like I can understand them. At first I just kind of wonder to myself whether I was just imagining it or not. But I really think because I love to listen to horses, and sometimes I listen to them so intently, I can understand them. Someday, I hope I can have a connection with my horse where I can understand him all the time!

From Stephenie in the USA

Hi! My horse Color and I have a special connection. In my story, the girl is a horse whisperer and I'm one too. My horse understands me and I understand him. I also had a horse called Ice but we didn't have a special connection like Color and I do.

From Kayla in the USA

My Angelica moment happened last winter. I was playing outside and decided to visit with my pony and horse. As I was petting them, I noticed my dog was walking toward the road, so I jogged over to stop her. Out the corner of my eye I saw my horses were jogging along beside me, from the opposite side of the fence! So I decided to make a game out of it by running back and forth. Sure enough, my horses were trotting along right next to me, from the other side of the fence! I felt like a horse whisperer!

From Abbie in the USA

My pony Amelia Bedilia is so small and cute. She is a Small Pony Hunter, but every time she gallops around the ring, I always feel connected to her.

Amelia Bedelia

From Rachel in the USA

I rode my horse today, but she really belongs to the Riding School. Her name is Trixie, and is what I call a chestnut beauty. One day I was riding her, and I was going to canter. I never cantered on her before so I was kinda nervous. I cantered and galloped before on my Grandma's horses, Little Linda and Dru. We missed the barrel on the long side of the paddock fence, so I slowed her to a trot. On the other long side of the paddock, I was thinking: "Please, what am I doing wrong?" For a sudden moment I thought Trixie said, "Shorten the outside rein!" Again, a strange thing happened. My coach yelled something like, "She likes you because she doesn't whinny much when people are riding her." I felt so excited.

From Bonnie Rose in the USA

One day My mom and I were driving home from the library. When we stopped at a light, I noticed a pasture. When I looked closer, I saw a beautiful chestnut mare grazing in it. I asked my mom to pull over. I got out of the car.Right after I shut the door, the mare perked up her ears and came cantering towards me. For a moment I was scared, but my fear was replaced with utter joy when she nuzzled my hand. I felt just like Angelica!

From Nicole in the USA

Here's my Angelica moment: I had just gotten a new horse. Her name is Brooke. I was riding and she spooked at a pig. I flew off and broke my arm. Instead of going crazy like some horses, she stood by me like she was protecting me.

From Ashley in Canada

one day my mom asked me to go to a wedding. i went and when we got there i saw some horses. there was this black one i could not keep my eyes off so when every one was at the wedding, it was outside, i walked to the beatiful black arabian and started to pet him. the guy who worked there told me his name was black hawk. "black hawk" i called. he came over to me. then the guy told me i could go inside and pet him so i went inside and i was petting him. most of the time i was with black hawk. we slept in a tent that night so at 7:00, i don't know why, but i got up and i ran to black hawk, and me and him were running on different sides of the fence together. it was so cute. he rested his head against my shoulder and i felt his warm breath in my hair. then at 10:00 my mom said we had to go. i wrapped my arms around his neck and hugged him. i gave him a kiss on his nose and said goodbye. im always dreaming about him and just a couple of days ago i heard there was a tornado that was somwhere over there and now im worried but my mom said he's gonna be okay. she said he's a very smart horse. i hope he's okay and he probably is, but i miss him. i havent seen him forever! :(

From Kara in the USA

The first horse that I have ever actually fallen in love with was a paint mare named Special. It was rather odd. I liked horses before her, but when she came along it changed my whole life! The first time I felt my "Angelica moment" was when she was in labor with her first foal, Boogie. I stood in the doorway of her stall and watched as she gave birth to him and she didn't even stop like many other horses have done. She trusted me so much that she didn't even act nervous when I entered the stall to pet her colt. She just carried on like she knew that I would never do anything to hurt him. Even thought she is the biggest horse at our farm, I feel so comfortable around her as if I was riding a pony.

From Rachel in the USA

I had trouble at my first riding lesson, and I also just finished Rattlesnake Rock. I didn't know what to do ( I already know how to ride ), and I heard a voice. It just told me what to do, and it ended up being the right thing!

From Lillie in the USA

Every time TNT, my pony, is in a jump off after going clean in a pony jumper class, I have a wonderful feeling. She is really fast and wins almost every time she goes into the show ring. I am really lucky to have her!

Lillie and TNT

From Maren Katrine in Norway

It was on one of my riding lessons, my riding teacher said that we were gonna jump. I was just so excited, and my pony, Amber, loves to jump. It was the best thing that has ever happened to me!!!!

Amber
Strider and Winnie

From Cara in Germany

My favorite horse was a mare called Espaniola. I was the only one who loved the wild and willful mare. Not even her owner liked her much. The most beautiful moment was when we were alone in her paddock. I groomed and fed Espe and then I go to the other paddock and Espaniola followed me like a shadow. It was like we were bonded with something. Sadly, it was the last day with her because she was sold a few days after that.

From Chelsea in the USA

In shows, Caly must know that we are in one because she is almost always in perfect tune with me. She canters along, jumping the jumps easily, and it seems like we're just flying around the course.

Another time she was lying down and where almost any other horse would pop right up when I open the stall door, Caly didn't. She let me go in and sit on her while she was still laying down. Then I had to ask her to get up, with me still on her. She's just so good and soooo sweet!

Chelsea and Caly
Strider and Winnie

From Megan in Canada

I have flown. I was very uncertain on Winnie but then, it happened. We bonded and I flew. This is such an exhilirating feeling. There is nothing that can even compare when you are on a horse and flying through the air. You are a single being. Winnie is my beautiful animal that I have bonded with and will be bonded with for the rest of my life.

From Kjerstina in Canada

It was after reading your books, I took up the courage to get on a horse again. I was so nervous and was practically shaking. Winnie was so calm though. The next time I rode her, I was trotting her. It was wonderful, there was a real connection I am sure. I could pulse with the rhythm to the horse, when I can't even pulse to the rhythm of music. It was no longer the girl and the horse, it was something much deeper. It was like there was some part of me that just broke out, and I was the horse, I was in her, I was running, and I felt wild and invincible, like me and her were one, and we were all that existed in the whole world. It wasn't about impressing the people who watch, it was about a relationship between two creatures. We didn't speak, not through words, but we spoke through our minds. It really is amazing. I love horses. They are so sweet!

From Elena in Finland

I am Elena and I have ridden horses for four years. I don't own a horse, but I ride at a riding school, where I have many horse buddies, and the top one is an Irish Tinker named Fiia. I started riding her about a year ago, and last summer I was in my first riding competition, of course, riding Fiia! I was very excited, and so nervous, now I don't remember almost anything about it. But I felt like I had a sort of connection with her, a connection I've never felt before. It was like Fiia suddenly realized I'm not any riding school girl, but somebody who really cares about her. Then, I got a rosette from the competition, and I felt like, now I've succeeded.

Elena riding Fiia

From Maria in California

One day I had a riding lesson and I was going to ride my favorite horse named Hobby. We were riding around this manmade lake in Coto de Caza. We were in a canter and I could see this pile of horse droppings and as we got closer and closer to it I could feel Hobby begin to build anxiety. He began to get tense and when we got ten feet away from the pile he tossed his head and broke out of the canter to an abrupt halt. Luckily I caught my balance before I was pitched forward or I would have been thrown. We walked for a while. Later on I gathered my confidence and I asked for the canter. He began to do a steady canter. I began to feel him fill with fright again and I wanted to soothe him. For fear that my riding instructor would think I was foolish I didn't say anything. Hobby kept on building momentum and I got scared because I knew what was going to happen. I started to say in my head, "Hobby if you get scared just slow down, just slow down buddy, I won't be angry with you." I said it over and over again, "Hobby if you get scared just slow down, just slow down buddy, Just s...l...o...w... it down Hobby, I won't be angry with you." Soon we neared an unfamiliar bush and Hobby's anxiety went to an all time high. I was fearful knowing what the next step would be. Suddenly he tossed his head and slowed to a fast trot. After a few seconds of fast trotting and my joyous whispers of "Good boy," we were cantering again and I felt like we could conquer anything together.
